Paumanok Path, Contiguous.

Saturday, April 23, 10am to 2pm – Celebrate Earth Day on the Paumanok Path 8-Mile Hike. Hike the newly completed final gap of the 124-mile trail, running from Rocky Point to Montauk Point! Meet at the Kurt Billing Loop trailhead. Directions: From County Road 39, turn north at the Magee Street traffic light. Turn right at the stop sign (Tuckahoe School on your right) onto Sebonac Road. Trailhead parking is on the left, approximately 0.2 mile from Magee Street. We will shuttle to the beginning of the hike, Squiretown Park aka Camp Tekawitha. Thanks to a lot of hard work by Eric Woodward, STPS Board Member in charge of Trails Planning and member of the Southampton Trails Advisory Board, we found a way to connect the Pine Barrens Trail to the Paumanok Path, without having to walk several miles on the shoulder of CR39. However, a fair amount of work remains to be done, and Matt is free only a single day next week, I’d welcome any assistance - please email me if you can help!
Posted are two pictures of the kiosk that the trail passes near as it cuts through the Town of Southampton Parks and Recreation property. Matt, who has been putting a lot of time in cutting and blazing the new trails, is holding a soggy STPS brochure while looking at the wrinkled and faded maps. Eric, creator of all the planning maps as well as the neat depiction of the Paumanok Path showing the gap, is pointing at the Kiosk, saying, “we have better maps to put in there.”
My wife Laurie, worked with me today to make certain that the trail through the Nature Conservancy property is ready for the April 23 hike. We saw some deer, turkey, a fox, and an assortment of birds in this globally rare habitat.
